This position is responsible for handling a variety of IP litigation matters, claims, and disputes on behalf of Medtronic. The Senior Director IP Litigation will develop strategy for successful outcomes and manage or conduct litigation to strategic objectives within budget; hire, supervise, and work closely with outside trial counsel; provide oversight to in-house paralegals; engage in and drive early evaluation and resolution of claims; and provide legal advice and counsel to business units on issues related to risk assessment and litigation risk avoidance. This position is anticipated to have at least three (3) direct reports. This role will have a dual reporting line to the VP/Chief IP Counsel and the VP/Chief Litigation Counsel.

There is a preference for this position to be based in Minneapolis, MN, Boulder, CO, Washington D.C., however, consideration may be given to work in one of our other US Medtronic office facilities. This position will work per the hybrid guidelines.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Evaluate, manage and conduct litigation for various operating units at Medtronic, including matters relating to patent, trademark, trade secret and other IP disputes
  • Hire, supervise and manage outside counsel nationwide
  • Provide management, leadership and career development to a high performing team of attorneys and paralegals
  • Develop and manage budgets for efficient and effective management of cases
  • Define strategy to achieve expected outcomes within agreed budgets and timelines
  • Provide day-to-day work direction and feedback to paralegal and administrative support personnel
  • Consult and collaborate with company business counsel on issues relating to litigation exposure and risk
  • Up to 25% travel

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • JD from a nationally recognized law school
  • Licensed to practice law and in good standing under the Bar of at least one state
  • 13+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house IP litigation role to include direct courtroom experience in IP cases with 10+ years management experience

Nice to Have

  • Technical background (science/engineering)
  • USPTO Registration
  • Previous in-house experience
  • Previous experience in the medical device field
  • A demonstrated record of leading high performing teams, leading, mentoring and developing lawyers and paralegals
  • Direct courtroom experience in IP cases, including Markman hearings, dispositive motions, depositions, mediations, and trials
  • Experience with direct client contact providing strategic litigation and risk management advice
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex technical and legal subject matter to a wide range of audiences
