Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking an ambitious individual to join our Global Legal team, working together with colleagues to define, manage and achieve divisional business targets.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risk faced by the entities and businesses in the US are identified, reported and mitigated.
  • Be accountable on all material legal issues that the business faces in the US.
  • Leading and managing a diverse team of lawyers to support the company.
  • Identify, formulate, co-ordinate and communicate the strategic and operational objectives of the US Legal function.
  • Ensure the legal risk management and cost effectiveness within the local Legal departments.
  • Create a favourable environment for best practice sharing and read across within regional departments, functions and businesses.
  • To act as a member of the Global Legal Executive Committee, contributing as required on global issues and leadership actions.
  • To be the accountable lawyer to the executives of the relevant region on all material legal issues that the business faces
  • Setting relevant policies and procedures for the US to ensure that Legal's role in the second line of defence can be executed.
  • Advising relevant Senior Management on non-standard legal and reputational risks.
  • Evaluating and responding to changes in legal and regulatory requirements as they arise, including acting as the interlock with local regulators, where applicable

  • A plan that supports sustainable business growth in the US and protects the bank, enabling the business to operate safely and within the letter and spirit of the law.
  • Engaged with the wider business agenda, knowing and understanding the client base, client needs and proactively providing sustainable solutions as well as challenging the business to ensure that appropriate controls are in place.
  • Delivery of strong, strategic leadership and partnership that includes guidance, challenge, support and development for staff. Team and associated knowledge is recognised and valued by stakeholders.

  • Provides clear, strong leadership for Legal.
  • Leads through change and acts as a role model for new ways and standards of working being open, dependable and connected.
  • Identify, develop, retain and motivate senior management teams.

For this role, HSBC targets a fixed pay range between $500,000 and $600,000.

The final fixed pay offer will depend on the candidate and a number of variables, including but not limited to, role responsibilities, skill set, depth of experience and education, licensing/certification requirements, internal relativity, and specific work location.

Requirements

To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Comprehensive understanding of the regional strategy for HSBC
  • Understanding of the legal landscape, regulatory requirements and political influences across the US.
  • Thinks broadly, has valid opinions and awareness of trends and changes within the US -particular legislative and regulatory trends.
  • Ability to influence thinking and behaviours regionally, can provide concise legal solutions to senior business sponsors; collaborates with internal and external stakeholders proactively to recommend or determine a course of action.
  • Exhibits robust judgement and decision making, and is resilient to challenge.
  • Experience of leading a function within a global financial services organisation.
  • Background of working in legally sensitive, evolving environments, balancing commercial, reputational and regulatory objectives.
  • Experience of working in a country GC or business line lead role is advantageous, including working with and providing advice to a board of directors.
  • A track record of creating, leading and motivating teams and operating in a matrix model; assembling the right expertise and effectively managing human capital to ensure correct coverage.
  • Has advised and influenced courses of action in the business and with regulatory bodies.
