An exciting opportunity has arisen for suitably qualified Bioinformaticians to join the All Wales Medical Genomics Service working flexibly for 37.5 hours per week. These are permanent, full time posts currently based at University Hospital of Wales - however, please note that we will be relocating to a new facility at Cardiff Edge in 2024.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be responsible for the analysis of genomic data and the development of new analytical methods, and will work closely with the team of Clinical Scientists, Researchers and Clinicians.

The All Wales Genomics Laboratory has a wide range of Next Generation Sequencing technologies and has recently launched the QuicDNA ctDNA study. This is an exciting time to join the service as we expand our services wider.

The All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) is hosted by the Cardiff & Vale University Health Board. Together with Cardiff University, Wales Gene Park and the Welsh Government they are working to deliver the Welsh Government Genomics for Precision Medicine Strategy for patients within Wales. This is a highly exciting and innovative strategy with opportunities for staff, healthcare professionals across Wales, patients and the public.

Qualifications

Essential

• Good BSc Hons in computer science or OR a relevant biological discipline with demonstrated abilities in informatics or computing

• postgraduate diploma in a relevant subject

Experience

Desirable

• Experience of molecular genetics, diagnostic genetics services or similar.

• Experience in IT, applications, developments, processes and organisation

• Project management

Skills

Essential

• Good critical and innovative thinking skills, and the ability to develop and implement innovative systems or ideas.

• Numerate and interested in extracting insight from data

• Experience of understanding the needs of stakeholders, ideally within health service delivery.

• Good verbal and written communication skills.

• Computer literacy

• Proven organisation skills

Desirable

• Experience of lecturing, training or presenting to scientists

Special knowledge

Essential

• Demonstrable programming experience with Python

• Experience working with Linux command-line and bash scripting

• Experience with software development, version control and unit testing

• Experience analysing next-generation sequencing (NGS) data

Desirable

• Experience of Clinical Bioinformatics within the NHS

• Knowledge of human genetics and molecular diagnostics

• Understanding of IT infrastructure (i.e. networking and systems engineering)

• App development experience with Django or similar web application framework.

• Experience with pipeline development and maintenance, ideally using a domain-specific language (i.e. NextFlow).

• Demonstrable experience with another programming language (i.e. C++, Java, R
