Saltchuk is seeking a Safety Manager/Director to help our family of transportation and energy distribution companies cultivate a best-in-class safety culture. In this role, you will coordinate safety data reporting across our 30+ operating companies, issuing monthly reports on safety performance and developing safety performance metrics. You will facilitate collaboration and learning among safety leaders across our family of companies by supporting various safety committees and work groups.

Position Summary

Saltchuk is seeking a Safety Manager/Director to help our family of transportation and energy distribution companies cultivate a best-in-class safety culture. In this role, you will coordinate safety data reporting across our 30+ operating companies, issuing monthly reports on safety performance and developing safety performance metrics. You will facilitate collaboration and learning among safety leaders across our family of companies by supporting various safety committees and work groups. You will also be key in tracking and managing timelines for investigating significant safety incidents and developing and implementing corrective actions relating to such incidents. To thrive in this position, you must be an influential safety leader with experience in safety data reporting, process management incorporating effective use of software systems, and driving organizational change. This role reports directly Saltchuk’s Senior Vice President and General Counsel with indirect reporting to Saltchuk’s Group Safety Leader.

Job Responsibilities

  • Act as the organizational liaison to evaluate the processes that Saltchuk uses to collect and report data relating to its safety performance, and to establish new, efficient processes that effectively use injury-reporting software. Work with Saltchuk’s Business Units to ensure that outcomes from the evaluation are implemented throughout the organization.
  • Coordinate and lead the efficient collection and reporting of safety data and development of safety metrics.  Perform robust data analysis to ensure accuracy, spot trends, and create recommendations for improvement.  Assist in setting annual safety goals for Saltchuk’s safety incentive program.
  • Implement processes for collecting and reporting safety data across the Saltchuk family of companies and serve as a resource for injury reporting.
  • Assist in the development of safety performance metrics and safety minimum standards that encompass lagging and leading safety indicators.    
  • Work with the Business Units to assess safety performance and drive continuous improvement.
  • Establish and maintain a Significant Safety Incident log and ensure timely investigation of such incidents and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Maintain Saltchuk incident reporting guidelines to drive learning among Business Units and operating companies.
  • Support, set the agenda, and assist in facilitating a variety of cross-company collaboration meetings, including the Saltchuk Safety Committee, industry work group meetings, etc.
  • Cultivate a vetted bench of key business partners/vendors, including coordinating a roster of outside subject matter experts to assist in safety investigations, audits, and training.
  • Audit Business Unit compliance with minimum safety standards that may be set from time to time.
  • Work with Saltchuk’s Risk Management team to audit compliance with the Minimum Vehicle Fleet Safety Standards established by Saltchuk’s captive insurance company.
  • Work with Saltchuk’s Risk Management team to prepare safety-related presentations to underwriters.
  • Facilitate the safety orientation process for new operating companies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which drive the improvement of safety across our family of companies.

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of proven experience in implementing high-impact safety programs.
  • 5+ years of previous experience in a maritime vessel operation or maintenance capacity preferred.
  • Excellent data management and proven analytical abilities, including strong Excel skills, as well as experience with safety-reporting technology platforms.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Leadership experience in a safety management role is helpful.

The pay range for this position is $125,000 to $175,000, depending on prior experience as a Safety Manager or Director, plus a significant annual bonus.
